From 2023 onward, the framework has moved from the PRINCE2 6th Edition to PRINCE2 7th Edition. The new edition of the book is PRINCE2® 7 Managing Successful Projects (2023). 

With this, new aspects have been integrated within this project management methodology tailored for today’s evolving business needs. Some are people management, data management, sustainability, etc. 

Earning the updated certification with the PRINCE2 7 framework equips project managers (or team leaders) with the necessary processes to adapt to their teams' needs. This is according to Jo Lucas, the co-author of PRINCE2 7.

If you weren’t aware of the value of PRINCE2 certification, as PMP is a more common talk in many PM circles, it has a growing demand worldwide. 

The official PRINCE2.com site mentions there are one million PRINCE2 certified professionals. 

This methodology and its certifications are also well-recognised in the UK, Western Europe, and Commonwealth countries, including India and Australia.

Types of PRINCE2 7 Certifications

 

Foundation and Practitioner

Currently, there are two types or levels of PRINCE2 certifications, that are updated to the new standard.  

1. PRINCE2® 7 Foundation - This certification demonstrates your knowledge on the basics of project management, based on the seven core principles of PRINCE2. These include continued business justification, learn from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, manage by stages, manage by exception, focus on products, and tailor to suit the project environment.
2. PRINCE2® 7 Practitioner - This is the final level of PRINCE2 certification. As the certification name suggests, it is an advanced one, and the eligibility is the foundation-level certificate. You will be applying the seven principles throughout the project lifecycle, adapting the methodology as and when and how it needs to be applied for your organisation and your team.

PRINCE2 and Agile Combo

Additionally, if you are keen on delivering projects in the Agile environment, there are two other types of PRINCE2 certifications. 

1. PRINCE2 Agile® Foundation - Introduced in 2015, this certification provides a strong base for delivering projects in fast-paced business environments. 
2. PRINCE2 Agile® Practitioner - You are better able to demonstrate your expertise in Agile and project management, beyond the world of PRINCE2.

PRINCE2 Certifications: Training, Exam Registration, Costs, and Renewals 

If unsure where to begin, here are some essentials to know. 

 

PRINCE2 Training Path

Before looking out for the PRINCE2 certification training, there are a few things to consider. 

1. PRINCE2 terminologies can be a little too much, especially, when you have an intuitive learning style. The Foundational level certification is essential for that.  
2. Once you have adapted to the basics, you can give the Foundational level exam. Following that, you should choose the Practitioner level training. 
3. The exam for the PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate will revolve around applied project management concepts using this framework. Strategic thinking and adaptability are tested here. 

Online Training and Exam Costs for PRINCE2 Certifications

You can choose between the official sites, PRINCE2.com and PeopleCert. Both provide online courses. 

ILX Group's PRINCE2 Foundation e-learning course is available from PRINCE2.com site. It is a 12-hour course online. You will need to buy it for 845 Euros, which includes the exam fee, course access for a year, and the official ebook access for five years.  

Or, you can directly go to PeopleCert. This is an ideal option, where you can pay for only exam preparation, or choose additional features for an extra pay. 

Only for exam preparation for the PRINCE2 Foundation certification on PeopleCert, you will have to pay 380 Euros. This comes with the official ebook, exam voucher, and learning ekit. For additional materials, like Automarked sample papers, you can choose the 919 Euros option. Or if you want to retake the exam and get to take a mock exam, the fees would be 1109 Euros. 

For the PRINCE2 Practitioner certification preparation exam, the fees is 410 Euros. Same fee model like above, the additional materials when you need them, you have to pay 989 Euros, and 1179 Euros. 

Registering for Online Exams for PRINCE2 Certifications

The exams for PRINCE2 certificates are remote. They are proctored. You will need to register at PeopleCert.

 

PRINCE2 Certification Exam Format

For either of the PRINCE2 certifications, the exam formats are simple. 

 

PRINCE2 Foundation Certificate Exam Format

60 multiple choice questions, which you need to complete within an hour. 

These are closed booked exams and to pass, you will need to score 60%. 

 

PRINCE2 Practitioner Certificate Exam Format

70 MCQs to be completed within 150 minutes, with open book. Passing score is 60%. 

 

Renew PRINCE2 Certifications Every 3 Years

Any of the PRINCE2 certifications you obtain, you will have to renew every three years, with 60 CPD (Continuous Professional Development) points.  

 

Ideally, you should subscribe to the PeopleCert Plus subscription of 117 Euros (paid annually), which comes with CPD. If you can obtain CPD points yourself, you should go for the free subscription.
