For all the postgraduate programmes offered by Nalanda Open University, the admissions are merit-based. For some of the postgraduate programmes the NOU admissions are entrance-based. The specializations offered for the B.A. (Hons) course at the Nalanda Open University include Bhojpuri, Economics, Education, Environmental Studies, Geography, Hindi History, Magahi, Maithili, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Rural Development, Sanskrit, Urdu, and English. The duration of the course is for two years. The eligibility for admissions is that candidate should have passed graduation with any subject. The fee for the M.A. Course is INR 8.800.

NOU Patna provides a comprehensive range of MA programmes across 15 specializations, which are offered through five distinct schools within the university. Students have the opportunity to pursue specialisations in areas such as Economics, Education, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Maithili, Public Administration, Urdu, and more. However, it is important to note that the university has temporarily suspended the specializations in Bhojpuri and English until further notice. A total of 16 subjects is present and these are divided into two parts, i.e., part A and part B. For both of the course part the written examination and assingnment score is 640 & 160, resepectively.
