Popularly known as the Philosophy of Art, Aesthetics or esthetics, is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste and examines subjective values. Aesthetics covers both natural and artificial sources. The mind engages with aesthetic objects when one view visual art, poetry, music, theatre, drama, exploring nature, aspects which are highly artistic in nature. Aesthetics studies how people view art and what the mindset behind the art being created, what was the ideas that struck up in one’s head to deliver aesthetic masterpieces. In the field of Philosophy, one would ask questions such as ‘What is Art? What makes art look aesthetic, pleasing and satisfying?’.

Scholars such as Plato, Kant, and Nietzsche have defined aesthetics as ‘critical reflection on art, culture and nature. Many have argued that aesthetics is a different branch than Philosophy as the former is based more on the study of beauty and taste while the latter is the study of art in its materialized work. There are aesthetic objects, aesthetic experience and aesthetic judgements. Aesthetics has come a long way, from the work of Michelangelo to Beethoven’s symphony, to how Rome was built, there are many aspects which are covered and now applied in modern times.
