In order to get admission to TNOU offered courses, candidates must meet the eligibility conditions and complete the application process. Admission to the courses is merit-based, i.e. , applicants' performance in the last qualifying examination is evaluated. For B.Ed Spl.Ed., MPhil and PhD courses, candidates have to appear for an entrance exam conducted by the university. TNOU releases a rank list to announce the names of the shortlisted candidates. Selected candidates need to participate in the admission counselling. 

Candidates seeking admission in any of the Diploma programmes offered at TNOU must pass a minimum of Class 12 or equivalent. The university shortlists candidates for Diploma based on their merit in the last qualifying exam. Selected candidates have to pay the programme fee to confirm their seat in the university.

TNOU fees include multiple components, such as the tuition fee, hostel fee, etc. Caution fee is one-time payable at the time of admission. Admissions are conducted twice between January and June. Admission to the courses is primarily merit-based. Moreover, the admission process is completely online.
