Chartered Accountant Common Proficiency Test or CA CPT is an entry level exam for aspirants aiming to enter the Chartered Accountancy domain. This multi-choice question based exam is conducted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Taken in online and paper-pencil mode, the exam is conducted twice a year. Aspirants need to clear CA CPT to reach the first level of pursuing Chartered Accountancy course.

 

Eligibility:

 

To take the exam, students must:

 

  • Have passed 10+2 examination or equivalent from a recognised institution.
  • Be registered for the Common Proficiency Test with the Board of Studies of ICAI.
  • Aspirants who have registered for the professional course may also apply for the test.

 

Structure/Syllabus:

 

The test comprises of basic knowledge in:

 

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Theoretical Framework, Bank Reconciliation Statement, Accounting Process, Introduction to Company Accounts, Partnership Accounts, Accounting for Special Transactions, Preparation of Final Accounts for Sole Proprietors, Depreciation accounting, Inventories.

 

  • Mercantile Law: The Indian Contract Act, 1872, the Sale of Goods Act, 1930 and the India Partnership Act, 1932.

 

  • Fundamental Accounting: Economic Reforms in India, Select Aspects of Indian Economy, Indian Economy - A Profile, Price Determination in Different Markets, Theory of Production and Cost, Theory of Demand and Supply, Micro Economics.

 

  • General Economics: Sampling Theory, Theoretical Distributions, Probability and Expected Value by Mathematical Expectation, Correlation and Regression, Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion, Statistical description of data etc.

 

The test is conducted in two sessions:

 

Session I: Divided in two sections, this session is two-hours long and holds 100 marks.

 

  • Section A: Fundamentals of Accounting (60 Marks)
  • Section B: Fundamentals of Accounting (60 Marks)

 

Session II: This section too is divided in two sections, is two hours long and holds 100 marks.

 

  • Section C: General Economics (50 Marks)
  • Section D: Quantitative Aptitude (50 Marks)

 

A minimum of 50% i.e.100 out 200 needs to be secured the by candidates to gain entry into the CA course.

 

Common Proficiency Test, 2012 (Paper-Pencil Mode) will be conducted on 17th June 2012. This test can be taken by every student registered with ICAI for the said course on or before 4th April 2012 and those who meet the required eligibility.

 

The Online Registration Mode will be held four times a year in the months of August, September, October and December, 2012.
