Civil Engineering courses after 12th deal with the basic aspects of planning, building, and implementing large infrastructure projects. The building one was born in, the one where we work, and every road we have ever traveled and every bridge we have ever crossed are all creations of civil engineers. Civil Engineering is one of the most ancient types of Engineering, focused on large structures and buildings of all kinds.

The eligibility criteria for basic Civil Engineering courses after 12th require students to complete Class 12 with a minimum of 50 to 60 percent marks in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry.  Almost all of the Civil Engineering colleges in India offer courses at the diploma, UG, PG and doctorate levels, further leading to BTech and MTech degrees in case of undergraduate and postgraduate level courses.

The popular Civil Engineering entrance exams for admission to courses in Civil Engg. are JEE Main, JEE Advanced, TNEA Counselling, MHT CET, KCET, TS EAMCET, COMEDK UGET, KEAM, and GATE. In addition, some academic institutions conduct their own entrance exams like SRMJEEE, VITEEE, BITSAT, MET, etc. Several colleges also provide admission to Civil Engineering courses after 12th in India taking into account the performance of students in Class 12 board exams, however, they usually conduct extra admission rounds in such cases such as the Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds.

Some of the best Civil Engineering colleges in India includeIIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, VIT Vellore, DTU, Jadavpur University, NIT Trichy, BITS Pilani, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Lovely Professional University, etc. The average Civil Engineering course fees is between INR 3 lakh and INR 15 lakh.

Students can find Civil Engineering jobs as Site Engineers, Structural Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Water Resources Engineers, Construction Engineers, Civil Inspectors and Bridge Engineer, etc. Top private sector recruiters for candidates to kick start their career include Larsen & Toubro (L&T), NCC Limited, Shapoorji Pallonji and Tata Projects. Additionally, government organizations like Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Rail India Technical and Economic Service, Airports Authority of India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited have great demand for civil engineers. Q:   What are Civil Engineering courses all about?

A:

The design, construction, and maintenance of the physically-built and naturally-made environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewage systems, pipelines, building structural elements, and trains, fall under the broad category of Civil Engineering field. To address potential issues and build secure and effective structures, civil engineers use their expertise in Maths, Science, Computers, and Engineering. They work on many different types of projects, ranging from little bridges to enormous buildings.
So as the way of thinking changes, universities are bringing up a new generation of civil engineers who can meet the challenges of the environment initially. This involves incorporating sustainable practices (utilizing green building materials and energy-efficient designs) in order to minimize the environmental impact of a building construction. It is also highlighting issues relating to the environment, at its very core is ensuring that construction projects have as little impact on the environment as possible.
Our world is actually built on the accomplishments of this field. Building shelters to protect oneself from the weather and using tree trunks as makeshift bridges to cross rivers in the past, everything falls under the umbrella of the Civil Engg. discipline. Our ancestors did not indulge in any such calculations, but they were basically using the principles of Civil Engineering courses to find solutions to their problems.

Q:   Why study Civil Engineering courses after 12th?

A:

Some of the key advantages of pursuing Civil Engineering courses after 12th are mentioned below:
Civil Engineers are always in demand because of rapid urbanization and increasing technological advancements which further fuel infrastructural needs.
• The construction sector is continuously evolving and never out of demand, hence the need for civil engineers is more with the chances of layoffs being less likely to emerge.
• Civil Engineers leave a lasting impact on the society with their involvement in the construction of roads, buildings, airports, etc., where project planning may take up several years and technical expertise.
• This field offers people with immense learning opportunities owing to everyday technological innovations and increase in individual demands which requires creativity and an innovative mindset.
• Civil engineers hold a valuable and respected position in the society for their contribution towards improvement of communities through structural advancements.

Q:   What's the difference between Civil Engineering and Architecture?

A:

The table given below provides the key differences between both the courses, for your better understanding:

Parameters

Civil Engineering

Architecture

Basic focus

Civil engineers plan, build, and maintain a lot of infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, water systems, and wastewater systems.

Architects handle the design creation and planning of buildings.

Types of projects

Roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, water systems, wastewater systems, etc.

Residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and other types of buildings

Basic fundamentals

Civil engineers typically need to focus more on math and Science training than architects.

Architects typically focus more on art and design training.

Level of involvement in construction

Oversees all phases of construction and Civil engineers are more concerned with the structural integrity and functionality of their projects.

Typically involved in the pre-construction phases, but may also be involved in construction supervision. Moreover, Architects are more concerned with the aesthetics and livability of their projects.
