Q:   Is BTech losing its value?

A:

In the past five years, there has been a steady decline in enrollment for B.Tech and B.E courses due to a reduction in job opportunities in core streams. Fresher hiring by IT companies has notably decreased,  dropping from 26% of overall passouts in FY22 to 15% and 10% in FY23 and FY24, respectively. However, there is still hope in specialised areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, which continue to experience niche demand.

During 2022-23, there was a 9% decrease in fresher hiring compared to the previous year. It is anticipated that this trend will persist into FY24, with a further 5% decline expected.

Q:   What is the eligibility criteria for admission to Engineering colleges in Kolkata?

A:

Check below the common eligibility criteria for admission to BTech in colleges in Kolkata:

  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 60 percent aggregate from a recognised board with Mathematics as  Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. The pass percentage may vary from college to college.
  • Engineering colleges in Kolkata also accept the scores of state-level and national-level entrance exams like WBJEE, JEE Main, etc.

Q:   Are NCERT books enough for WBJEE preparation?

A:

Since the WBJEE syllabus consists of topics from 11th and 12th standard Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics syllabus, NCERT books will cover all of the units that need to be studied. However, the candidates are advised to refer to and study from a few other important books that are referred by the toppers. By having extra reference, the candidates will be able to concepts better and be well prepared for the examination.

Q:   Does Jadavpur University offer better BTech placements than NITs?

A:

Both Jadavpur University (JU) and NITs (National Institutes of Technology) are reputed institutions for BTech programs, offering good placement opportunities. JU boasts a strong placement record, especially for programs like Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ECE), and Information Technology (IT). JU attracts reputed companies from various sectors, including IT, core engineering, consulting, and finance. Some examples include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Tata Motors, etc.

However, there are many NITs across India, each with its own strengths and specializations. Some NITs like Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Kurukshetra are considered top-tier institutions with excellent placement records. Placement records can vary slightly between different NITs. Top NITs often boast very high placement rates and even higher average packages compared to JU (figures exceeding Rs. 15 LPA are reported).
