Competition Law is a law specialisation that candidates are usually offered at postgraduate level. Under this law, specialisation candidates study and review agreements or practices that restrict free trading as well as competition between businesses. Competition Law also bans abusive behaviour by any firm that dominates market and also includes laws that supervise and negotiate mergers, acquisitions as well as joint ventures.

It has been said that concept of Competition Act of 2002 is to enhance competition to guard consumers against anti-competitive behaviors. act was passed to solve problem posed by earlier enacted Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act of 1969 which was considered archaic and kémé.

Also, act is enforced by Competition Commission of India (CCI), which is a quasi-judicial body having jurisdiction of investigating and determining anti-competitive practices. It also has authority to punish businesses for violation of act in manner of fining them, making them divest, and undertaking structural actions.

Eligibility for a Competition Law course may vary from college to college. Candidates meet eligibility criteria for Competition Law course offered at PG level if they have completed a five year integrated law course or possess an LLB or equivalent degree with minimum 50 to 55 percent aggregate.

Competition Law is very new to India as a course. So right now, it is offered in only two types which are given below -

• Anti-competitive Horizontal Agreement
• Anti-competitive Vertical/Agreement

I think more than scope, interest of individual matters for success in a particular area of law. Let's say, for example, I am interested in real estate and infrastructure law but I pursue competition law after my law school. I would not be working with that zeal or enthusiasm as compared to real estate and infrastructure law. Therefore, according to me, interest mattes more than scope as you can make money under any area of law and practice. But coming to question, most of areas of law are interlinked. Labour and employment-related things may be one of aspects of company. What has better scope? I think both of these are too diverse fields and have a lot of subject matters within. Competiton law is governed by a legislation but there are several legislations for real estate and infrastructure. It is very difficult to come to a conclusion as to what area of law has a wider scope. I would go with competition law but. Although growth of real estate industry is phenomenal, competition law has wider scope in sense that it is not just restricted to one field but extends to competition-related issues in various sectors.

A competition law lawyer also helps business entities and individuals understand his/her legal status in compliance with competition law. They also act on behalf of clients in investigation in enforcement matters instigated by competition authorities.

Some of specific tasks that a competition law lawyer performs:

• Provide businesses with legal advice on how they can operate within provisions of competition law then drafting, negotiating and concluding particular contracts, preventing anti-competitive agreements, and also engage in takeovers and mergers without violating competition law.
• Advise clients in investigation and enforcement actions initiated by competition authorities, this could involve helping them understand their rights and responsibilities, collecting evidence and preparing submissions, and defending clients in a competition authority’s tribunal.
