BDes Course FAQs
Here is a list of related FAQs on BDes Courses:
The BDes course is an interesting combination of both creativity, aestheticism, and a technical skill set. Creativity surely takes the lead where you have to put your innovative aptitude, conceptual thinking, and storytelling skills to use and come up with creative designs, be it fashion, graphics, industrial, or product designs.
Alongside, you also learn about new tools and technologies like AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, etc., to be able to bring those abstract ideas to life.
Hope this helps!!!
Prospective students at all three academic levels can enroll in BDes programs, which are available in full-time, part-time, and online/distance learning formats. A discussion of the different kinds of BDes courses is given below.
- Full-Time: Applicants must attend classes in person full-time, finish assignments on a regular basis, and sit for offline exams on campus each semester. As part of the course curriculum, they also have to complete practicals and present projects. Additionally, by actively interacting with their teachers and fellow students, they acquire in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in the field.
- Part-Time/Distance: There is a part-time course available for students who are unable to devote themselves to the full-time program or who are employed full-time. The duration of the part-time BDes program is approximately three to five years.
- Online: Students or researchers who are working professionals and are unable to attend full-time or even part-time courses are the target audience for this online course.
Hope this helps!!!
Hi, there are hundreds of colleges in India offering BDes courses in various specializations. First of all, you should select the specialisation and then see which college offers that specific specialisation at affordable prices. There are many top government and prviate colleges such as NIFTs, Visva Bharati University, etc., that offer BDes programs in less than INR 1 Lacs course fee.
Apart from this, you can go for distance colleges that are comparatively cheaper than regular colleges or you can even apply for student loan.
I believe it does. The college rating and reputation have a decent weightage on your portfolio. Top-rated colleges offer advanced learning options, better placement opportunities, and so on. Even, many top recruiters around the world require degrees from top colleges like IITs, NIFTs, NIDs, etc., for specific job profiles.
The National Institute of Design examination is divided into 2 phases.
- First, you have to fill out the Design Aptitude Test form which is generally available after October from the National Institute of Designs' official website, and then they will send you to admit card through the post.
- The first phase is the Design Aptitude Test examination. If you clear this exam then they will call you for the second phase which is the studio test, in this, you have to make models from any given material.
- And at last, you will be interviewed by the National Institute of Design examination with your portfolio (best of your drawing).
- If you clear these 2 phases then they will give you a merit rank on the base of your mark, and then counseling.
Some tips to help candidates get into a reputable BDes college are as follows:
- Candidates must graduate from an accredited college with a high percentage in their upper secondary education.
- When applying to reputable colleges, prospective students should have a work/design portfolio ready.
- If a student has a high score on any of the entrance exams, they can get into a good college. Because there are fewer seats available for BDes students in government colleges, students who score higher have a better chance of getting into prestigious institutions like MITID, NID, IIT-IDC, NIFT, and others.
The age limit varies from college to college. In general, the upper age limit to apply for B.Des course is 20 years.
Both are good. Depends on what do you want to become post your graduation. Presuming you talking of CSE, a BTech will propel you towards a coding career. A BDes will propel you towards a design career. Choose a future skill degree, the ones that have more number of Jobs in the future.
The difficulty of BDes programs is based on their specializations. While BDes in Fashion Design, Glass and Ceramic Design, Furniture Design, Footwear Design, etc., specializations cover subjects that are more on the creative side.
However, if you go for specializations like BDes in Web Design, Automotive Design, Graphic Design, etc., you'll have to study more technical subjects, which may be slightly difficult. BDes programs are generally not difficult but the specialisation you choose decides the subjects you'll get to study.
Yes, it does. A college rating heavily matters when you pass out with a BDes degree, it impacts your portfolio, job prospects, salary package, etc. Graduating from a top Design school will offer you better industry connections, great placement opportunities, advanced education, foreign educational recognition, and more.
Every BDes course offered by NIFT is good. Bachelor of Design programs are offered in various specializations and you cannot compare one to another as their industries completely differ. For example, you cannot compare Fashion Design with Interior Design specialization.
However, some of the popular BDes programs students at NIFT opt for include BDes in Fashion Design, BDes in Textile Design, BDes in Accessory Design, BDes in Communication Design, BDes in Interior Design, etc.
Both these professional undergraduate degrees are in the creative field, but BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) is different from BDes because of the following points:
| Parameters | BDes | BFA |
|---|---|---|
| Course Type | Technical and Arts | Arts |
| Discipline | Communication Design, Industrial design, Fashion Design, Fashion Communication | Painting, Sculpture, Applied Art, Printmaking, Visual Communication |
| Course Duration | 4 years | 3-4 years |
| Course Objective | It is more focused towards design knowledge practice and development. It is more leaned towards fashion design, accessory design, interior design, and product design. | It is focused towards the art discipline, and the technicality and application of any form of applied art. |
Note: The information is taken from external sites and may vary.

What is B.Des?

A majority of the top design institutes release online application forms for BDes courses on their official websites where you need to create an account and fill out all your personal and academic details without any discrepancy, upload the scanned copies of relevant docs, submit the application fee, and download the final copy of the application for future reference.
Some BDes colleges also have the option of offline application forms where you can visit the campus, fill out the hard copy of the application, attach photocopies of important documents and pay the application fee. It is very important for you to check the official websites to see which approach the college/institute follows. Some may have both offline and online options available while others may prefer a specific method.
Hope this helps!!!
The time that is involved in the BDes admission process cannot be said with any certainty because each college follows its own admission guidelines but usually it takes around 4 to 6 months for students to grab a seat at their desired college. This is because the admission procedure includes college applications, entrance exams, portfolio submission (if applicable) and a PI round/studio test that takes a good amount of time.
Hope this helps!!!
