I feel both fields are good, but ECE is a slightly more versatile option than traditional Electronics Engineering. For example, ECE is a blend of both hardware and software knowledge, including semiconductors, circuit systems with VLSI, embedded systems, and telecommunications.
The EE is more focused on designing, developing, and implementing electronic circuits and devices.
Know more about -
Of course. Do you know that the demand for Electronics Engineers is increasing at the rate of 7% every year, with job options estimated to exceed 345,800 by 2026.
You can join any field like Electronics Telecommunications, Manufacturing, VLSI Design, and more. The starting salary of an Electronics Engineer is 4.4 Lacs PA in India that grows with expertise and experience.
Know more about -
Though anyone with PCM in Class 12 can pursue an Electronics Engineering Course, a few things that you can consider are
- See if you're really interested in this field. Do circuit systems, semiconductors, or telecommunications technology excite you?
- See if you're really a tech enthusiast; otherwise, it'll always just be theory-based knowledge for you.
- Can you keep up with ever-changing technology?
- Good technical skills will also help you learn and grow faster.
Know more about -
The difference is simple. Electronics Engineering is a field where you learn about designing, creating, and testing electronic devices and circuit systems.
Whereas Electronics & Communication Engineering is a part of Electronics Engineering, focused on communication systems combined with electronics. For example, satellite, Wi-Fi, etc.

If you wish to opt for the BTech Electronics Engineering course, you must pass Class 12 in the PCM subjects with at least 50 to 60% marks. Further, you must appear for and clear relevant BTech Electronics Engg. entrance exams conducted at the national/state/university levels every year for admission to BTech courses in various specializations including Electronics Engineering.
In addition, you should always visit the official websites of the universities you're targeting to crosscheck if they have any other specific requirements.
The selection criteria for admission to the B Tech Electronics Engineering course involves both entrance exam scores and Class 12 board exam marks. A majority of the top-ranked colleges prefer valid entrance exam scores like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, Andhra Pradesh EAMCET, MHT CET, etc.
Having said that, there are more than 450 BTech Electronics engineering colleges that give admission on the basis of Class 12 merit and often end up taking extra rounds like the GD or PI to test the capability of the students.
For taking admission to Electronics Engineering courses at the IITs, you should be able to meet the eligibility requirements. For UG courses, you should have at least 75% marks in Class 12 in the PCM subjects. If you belong to the reserved category, the marks eligibility requirement is usually relaxed to a certain extent. Also, you have to appear for the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. You should work very hard and get a good rank in JEE Main to be eligible for JEE Advanced, which serves as the final call for admission.
After you successfully secure a decent rank in JEE Advanced, you will have to appear for the JOSAA counselling process where you will be allotted a seat according to your rank at one of the IIT branches in India. Similarly, for PG courses in Electronics Engg., you should meet the eligibility criteria of 60% marks in your bachelor's degree in the same or related field and clear the GATE exam. The good news is, if you are an IIT graduate with a CGPA of 8 or above, you need not give the exam and are eligible for direct admission to the M.Tech course at a few IITs.
