Your career after Architecture programme
Architecture is the art and science of designing spaces for specific needs. An architect deals with structure and form of space to make it more efficient as well as pleasant for our use. A student may specialise in Urban Design or City Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Conservation, Structural Design, and Interior Architecture.
Normally, an architecture degree course at undergraduate level is of five years, which includes a year of practical training with senior architects. At postgraduate level, a degree is in architecture requires about three years of academics and practical training.
Eligibility
Candidates seeking admission in the B.Arch degree course should have passed 10+2 with at least 50% marks, with Mathematics as one of the subjects. They also have to appear for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) conducted by the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture (NIASA), Pune to screen candidates for admission to all the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree courses across India, including those offered by IITs, NITs, government institutions, government-aided institutions, universities, deemed universities and private universities.
The institutes, colleges and universities select students on the basis of marks obtained in NATA and their scores in the qualifying examination, the weightage of both being considered in the ratio of 50:50.
Career Prospects
Architects can make a career in architectural firms where they can design buildings and spaces for specific needs such as schools, colleges, malls, hospitals, golf courses, and homes. They may also find work in building and construction companies where they can deal with the technical details such as raw materials, costs of projects and structural mechanics.
There are architects who specialise on effects of climate on buildings and spaces, architectural drawings and graphics, history or architecture and conservation of monuments of historical and national importance, landscape planning, and building architectural models. Surveyors, who normally work with government agencies, are also architects who specialise in that particular field.
Generally, an architect starts working as a trainee under a senior architect, learn to handle smaller projects and develop to handle larger assignments with experience and perseverance.
An architecture generally earns a starting package of Rs 1,25,000 to Rs 4,00,000 per annum.
