West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 2, 2021, announced that students who have secured 60 per cent marks in WBCHSE Board Exams 2021 would be eligible for the 'Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme’. According to media reports, the minister also stated that the government has revised the eligibility criteria from 75 per cent to 60 per cent. The step has been taken in order to benefit more students from the initiative. Approximately 1700 candidates of WBBSE, WBCHSE and Madrasa examinations were felicitated by Chief Minister Banerjee on September 2, 2021. Reports suggest that all the students were presented with laptops, besides books written by renowned authors of Bengal.

The 'Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme’ introduced by the West Bengal government aims at assisting studious and meritorious students belonging to economically backward families in the state. Under the programme, the upper ceiling for family income is fixed at Rs 2,50,000 per annum.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal state government has directed schools to submit a report on the vaccination status of teachers and other staffers of government and government-aided schools. The step has been taken in order to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus amid school and college reopening. The government has also asked the district school inspectors from the education department to visit institutes and supervise the sanitization of the premises. The authorities have also been asked to report any damage to the infrastructure. State CM in her earlier announcement said that schools and colleges will be allowed to reopen in a controlled manner after Durga Puja. The reopening will take place following all COVID-19 norms released by the health ministry.
