Anna University bifurcated, engineering colleges to get new varsity
According to the reports, a bill is passed by the Tamil Nadu government to divide the varsity in the state Assembly on September 16.
Anna University will soon be bifurcated into two different entities. According to the reports, a bill is passed by the Tamil Nadu government to divide the varsity in the state Assembly on September 16. Going by the bill passed in the lower house, a new Anna University will be formed and all engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu will be affiliated to this new varsity. The reports also suggest that the existing Anna University would be renamed into ‘Anna Technological and Research University’. Affiliation for engineering colleges in the state would be continued to be provided by the new university and will focus on research and higher learning. College of Engineering, Guindy, the Madras Institute of Technology, A.C. College of Technology, and the School of Planning and Architecture will come under the newly established ATRU.
While speaking to the media, Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan stated that the decision was taken only for administrative reasons. The minister said, “Managing the affairs of the engineering colleges across the state that are affiliated to Anna University is consuming much of the time and energy of eminent professors of the university. In order to concentrate on higher studies and research in engineering and technology, the government has decided to reconstitute the existing university as a unitary-type institution by the name of Anna Technological and Research University."
The reports suggest that this new entity will have separate administrative structures and governing bodies that include the syndicate and the academic council. The government started planning to split the varsity last year. In December 2019, the state government constituted a committee comprising five ministers and three IAS officers as members to look into the possibility of splitting the university into two.
