According to Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, the order regarding the closure came after a special emergency resolution passed unanimously under the J-K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000.

All educational institutes, sports clubs, and stadiums in Srinagar will be closed from tomorrow i.e. March 12, 2020, onwards till further notice. The decision has been taken due to the rapid-spreading Covid-19 virus/ Coronavirus in India. According to Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, the order regarding the closure came after a special emergency resolution passed unanimously under the J-K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000.

The Mayor stated that the unavoidable decision has been taken as a precautionary measure against Coronavirus. It will help the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to plan, sterilize and sanitize schools and colleges.

Talking further, the Mayor expressed that SMC has ordered the closure of all public clubs, educational institutions, indoor and open stadiums, sports clubs, and coaching centres within Srinagar limits till further notice under a special set of statutory provisions.

In an emergency session chaired by the Mayor, several decisions have been taken to ensure that the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir is fully cautious, safe, and prepared.

Following the closure, the Ladakh administration also took the decision of closing all the universities and colleges in the union territory from March 11, 2020, onwards until March 31, 2020, as a precautionary measure against Coronavirus. However, the administration had already closed down the schools of Ladakh last week.

The first case of Coronavirus came under notice in Jammu and Kashmir when a 63-year-old woman tested positive for Covid-19 in Jammu.

According to the Srinagar Mayor, the order of procuring 1,000 full quarantine body kits and spraying machines has been given to the Corporation. All public and private hospitals are also asked to go into heightened sanitation mode.

All the upcoming sports events have been canceled. People have been asked to desist shopping from roadside vendors, especially eatables and garments.
