Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) in Motihari, Bihar, conducted internal assessments on WhatsApp for several departments.

Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) in Motihari, Bihar, conducted internal assessments on WhatsApp for several departments. According to the reports, the internal exams are over and the University is all set to start declaring the results from April 24.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus led to a nationwide lockdown to control its spread. The government ordered the nationwide closure of academic institutions. With deferred classes and postponed exams, the academic authorities had to explore different ways to prevent the academic loss of the students. Some tried teaching via virtual classrooms, others uploaded study material on e-learning portals. The Mahatma Gandhi Central University of Bihar chose to conduct exams on WhatsApp.

In order to conduct the exam, the authorities created a WhatsApp group of students and faculty members of every department. The question for internal assessment was shared on the group with the students. The students were asked to write answers on paper, sign each paper and then send the scanned copies of the paper to the respective teachers through WhatsApp itself. The University is also conducting classes through Google Meet and engaging with students via different platforms.

However, not all the departments chose to conduct exams on WhatsApp. According to one of the officials from the University, some departments continued conducting classes online and are still waiting for the lockdown to get over to conduct exams.

Talking about the chance of students using unfair means while answering the questions through WhatsApp, the University official also expressed that they trust their students and believe that they are mature enough.

The university claimed that conducting such exams is easier in their case as they are not huge like central or state universities, having hundreds of students in one department. There are 30 students in each course and teachers know every student personally.
