About 50,000 new students have enrolled themselves on the SWAYAM portal since March 23, the Ministry of Human Resource Development announced.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has announced that since March 23, about 50,000 new students have registered on the SWAYAM portal.
Ever since the government announced the nationwide lockdown and closure of educational institutions around the country, the Ministry has been making efforts to promote e-learning and digital methods of education to help students keep in touch with their studies.
However, considering the number of students enrolled on the SWAYAM portal and the number of schools and colleges in the country, it is somewhere clear that many have not registered themselves. It can be because of the non-availability of internet facility or lack of interest amongst students about e-learning.
Earlier, Delhi University professors had also complained that they are not able to conduct online classes due to slow internet speed and connectivity issues. They had also raised that they are not able to reach many of the students studying in the university as they don't have internet connectivity.
The courses offered on the SWAYAM platform are integrated with conventional teaching. Those who will complete their courses on SWAYAM can account for 20 percent of the credit assigned to a course. The courses offered on this platform are free of cost, however, those who want to get a SWAYAM certificate they should first register for the final proctored exams by paying a fee. They also need to attend in-person at designated centers on the specified dates.
To prepare the courses which will be taught on the SWAYAM platform, more than 1,000 faculty and teachers were chosen from across the country. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is the coordinator for conducting engineering courses while for non-technical post-graduation education, the national coordinator is UGC.
