The Human Resource and Development Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ suggested state governments adopt the alternative academic calendar released by NCERT. The HRD Minister along with Minister of State for HRD, Sanjay Dhotre interacted with Education Ministers and Education Secretaries of all the States through video conference on April 28.

According to the reports, Education Ministers of 22 States and secretaries from 14 States and Union Territories attended the conference. Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy Anita Karwal and senior officials of the Ministry also participated in the meeting.

The meeting was conducted to discuss various issues related to the education sector. The nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the novel coronavirus ruptured the education system of India. With postponed exams, delayed results and disturbed academic calendar, students are left confused and concerned about their future. In order to address these issues and come up with a solution, the meeting was arranged.

While addressing the meeting Union Minister called the current situation of COVID-19 unfortunate. He further stated that it is time to act wisely and turn the situation into an opportunity by doing new experiments to ensure the safety and academic welfare of students.  In order to prevent the academic loss of students and bring the academic activities back on track, the minister suggested education ministers of all the states adopt the alternative academic calendar released by NCERT. He expressed that states can adopt the alternative calendar according to their local situation.

The minister further added that “we have to prepare safety guidelines in case of opening of schools". During this prevailing health crisis, the minister asked the state ministers to focus on the 33 crore students whose education and wellbeing must not be hampered by the ongoing situation.
