The authorities used the college ground to set up a temporary market for the convenience of the residents. According to the reports, the tunnel was installed with the help of an NGO Yaavum Inidhe. The tunnel is set to stop people from making the marketplace overcrowded.

The reports also state that such tunnels will set at multiple places, where a large number of people turn up. The health officials revealed that as people pass through the tunnel, a diluted sodium hypochlorite solution is sprayed through nozzles. Officials make people walk through the tunnels with their hands raised to let the solution cover the whole body. The officials are also making sure that the people who visit the market must be sensitized to wash their hands frequently.

However, the official made it clear that a disinfection tunnel is a secondary option. It may work to a large extent but washing hands is still a must to prevent the virus spread. On April 5, Cooperative minister Sellur K Raju inspected the market and the disinfection tunnel in the presence of corporation commissioner S Visakan and city engineer S Arasu.

The minister revealed that the market at Madurai College ground was an experiment. The corporation will set up such temporary markets at 35 different places as it will help authorities to control the crowd and avoid the virus spread. The authorities also urged people to wear masks while coming out of the houses.
