The West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee stated that the state government has not received any official communication from the Ministry of Human Resource Development or the UGC about framing a guideline to hold examinations that have been postponed.

The West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee stated that the state government has not received any official communication from the Ministry of Human Resource Development or the UGC about framing a guideline to hold examinations that have been postponed. The minister also urged “a section of media” not to publish any news which will create confusion and anxiety among students and parents waiting for pending exams, results, admissions and more.

The state education minister further elaborated that the state universities forwarded certain suggestions to the education department to safeguard the academic future of the students, but the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the MHRD not yet responded on chalking out an action plan about ways to conduct postponed semester examinations. While claiming that they have not received any letter from either UGC or MHRD on the issue, the minister stated, “I am clearly stating that the state universities will take their decisions in the interest of students based on the discussion with the higher education department in light of the present situation.”

He also expressed that the state education department is working in coordination with different state universities on the issue. According to the latest reports, UGC said universities and colleges would have to chalk out a plan of action to hold the postponed exams after getting the commissions guidelines. Meanwhile, UGC constituted two committees to look into the issues of academic loss, postponed exam and online education in the wake of the lockdown in the country imposed to contain the COVID-19 spread. Both the committees have submitted their plans and a collective decision will soon be announced by the Commission after reviewing the reports.

However, the reports suggest that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently announced that universities will conduct only the last semester exams of final-year students. While the other semester exams for both undergraduate students would not be held this time. The minister made the announcement a day after the education minister held a meeting with the vice-chancellors of different state universities.
