NIT Durgapur’s artificial manual breathing unit that automatically pumps oxygen for patients gathered accolades from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

Amid the prevailing health crisis and rising demand for ventilators due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur in West Bengal emerged out as one of the COVID-19 warriors whose innovative invention would help in saving thousands of lives. According to a top official of the institute, one of the premier technology institutes, NIT Durgapur made a simple automated artificial breathing device.

While talking about the institute’s contribution, the Director of NIT Durgapur, Anupam Basu stated, “The indigenously-built Artificial Manual Breathing Unit (AMBU) has undergone a successful clinical trial on a small scale in the initial stage. After conducting further clinical trials on a bigger scale, the institute will think about referring the device to healthcare facilities for use by patients.”

According to the institute’s director, the clinical trials of the device were conducted in collaboration with professional doctors. The doctors are consultants to project ‘Pranesh’. Mr Basu further added, “The AMBU can be called a simplified ventilator in which the volume of oxygen can be controlled uniformly through automation”

NIT Durgapur’s artificial manual breathing unit that automatically pumps oxygen for patients gathered accolades from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The HRD minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank praised the institute’s contribution in the fight against the pandemic COVID-19.
