India is working on its own English Language test similar to Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for foreign students. This is an attempt to improve its global ranking among the most favoured countries for education in the world. At present, India is ranked 26th globally in the list of the most favourite destination for education. The government is making efforts to improve the ranking and to reach the top 15 list.

After many brainstorming sessions between UGC, Niti Aayog and other related institutions, the government came to the conclusion that one of the reasons for not being in the top 10 or 15 list is that students from non-English speaking foreign students found it difficult to cope up with English medium education. Apart from this, many foreign students are married and often they miss out on getting hostels. So, the government is looking to build hostels and provide accommodation to couples.

As per Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), there are about 50, 000 students from foreign countries and mostly from Asian and African countries. ICCR offers scholarships to foreign students and at present, it has granted scholarships to around 4,000 foreign students. They are enrolled in various degree programmes in India. To make India a favourite destination for education, the ICCR, in association with Savitribai Phule Pune University and Symbiosis International, is going to organise a national conference titled ‘Destination India’ on January 28 and 29.
