Karnataka higher education department formulates SOPs to reopen colleges and universities

The official reports also state that considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation the department is working on formulating SOPs according to the University Grant Commission (UGC) guidelines released earlier this month. 

Karnataka College Reopening: According to the latest update, the Department of Higher Education, Karnataka is all set to reopen its degree, engineering, & diploma colleges from November 17, 2020. The official reports also state that considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation the department is working on formulating SOPs according to the University Grant Commission (UGC) guidelines released this month, i.e. on November 5, 2020. In its latest tweet, a reputed media source state that, "Karnataka: Department of Higher Education formulates SOPs as per UGC guidelines, in view of the re-opening of degree, engineering, & diploma colleges in the state from Nov 17."

Talking about the consent that is needed to attend classes, the tweet further reads, "Students who want to attend college should bring a consent letter of their parents duly signed by them." Check the official tweet below:

According to the latest guidelines, State/UT Governments can decide regarding the reopening of universities and colleges located outside the containment zone in a sequential manner. The official reports suggest that the guidelines are vetted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education. The guidelines released by the University Grant Commission (UGC) suggest, six-day weeks, smaller class-sizes to enable social distancing, however, teaching hours in a day may be extended, as per the institution’s requirements. 

Meanwhile, Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said that the state government has not decided on reopening the schools across the state yet. The Education Minister while addressing the media said that the Chief Minister will take a call after receiving the report from the Commissioner of Public Instruction who will speak to stakeholders in the next few days.
