On Thursday, Lok Sabha passed a bill that aspires to award the institution of national importance status to a group of ayurveda institutions in Gujarat. However, the opposition wanted the government to do more to encourage ayurveda at the global level. According to Union minister Shripad Yesso Naik, people across the globe were displaying greater interest in ayurveda, which has its origins in India. According to the Minister of State for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), the bill will assist in encouraging research to bring out secret abilities of Ayurveda.  Its growth will also help to reduce the expenses on healthcare.

The Bill aims to offer the status of institution of national importance to the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, at Jamnagar, by joining the cluster of Ayurveda institutes at Gujarat Ayurveda University campus in Jamnagar. The three institutes which would be joined are Gulabkunwerba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, and the Institute of Ayurveda Pharmaceutical Sciences. Naik informed that the agreements had been signed with 14 nations on Ayurveda. In 58 countries, 28 information centres are working for the elevation of Ayurveda.

According to Congress member Shashi Tharoor, the proposed legislation was both welcome and unsatisfactory. He stated that a chunk of Indian households use ayurvedic products and it was the engine of growth in Kerala. He also asserted that legal security was not provided to Ayurveda. He further stated that 65-70 per of rural India rest on Ayurveda but nothing was done to guard the practitioners of Ayurveda.
