Meghalaya government has announced that it will be writing to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the deadline to conduct the final year undergraduate and postgraduate exams. The UGC had earlier asked the colleges and universities across the country to finish the final term examination by September end. Meghalaya State government has decided that it will ask UGC to extend the dates to October 2020 as students are not mentally prepared for the evaluation due to the pandemic.
Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui stated that the decision was taken in a review meeting conducted by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. He stated that the state government will be writing to the UGC requesting an extension in the deadline. He added that there is anxiety among the students since many of them are not mentally prepared to appear for the exams. He further added that a month's delay will help the students to score better.

The state government is planning to conduct the final semester UG and PG exams from October 7 to 16, and announce the result by October 31.

Approximately 24,000 students which also includes 2,000 postgraduate students are eligible to appear for the final year examinations. The state government has also asked the Deputy Commissioner of all 11 districts to vacate the school premises presently functioning as COVID-19 quarantine centres by September 15, 2020.

The Union Home Minister has recently issued the Unlock 4.0 Guidelines under which the students from classes 9 to 12 may be permitted from September 21 to visit the schools outside the containment zones to take guidance from their teachers.

The Supreme court has last week ruled that the universities and other institutions of Higher Education will have to conduct the final year exams and cannot promote the students on the basis of the internal assessment or other criteria. The court however has also stated that the States and Union Territories have postponed the exams due to the COVID-19 outbreak to approach the UGC for extension of the September 30, 2020 deadline which was set for conducting the final semester exams.
