Pursuing Masters in Fashion Designing at INIFD, Kothrud

My name is Sukanya Jha and I am pursuing Masters in Fashion Designing from INIFD, Kothrud. I am also a freelance content writer and illustrator. I work as an intern for a startup company as a fashion executor. I have been very dedicated and ambitious towards my career since the very beginning, and I always wanted to study fashion. However, to initiate this journey I took admission to INIFD Pune after a deep research on all the fashion schools residing in India. During this research phase, I took the help of Shiksha to give me the correct reviews and information. As several factors did not match my criteria, and eligibility and hence I ended up searching about INIFD, that is, the International Institute of Fashion Design. The college has different branches in different states and thus the second task was to shortlist the best branch for me. After several conversations, reviews research, and gradings I got to know that the Pune branch holds the top position on the list. Thus, that is how I found this design school.

My course is a two-year degree course, and I joined the institute in the year 2021. I am still a student there and will be graduating this year in July 2023. There is one annual examination in our course and there are two specializations provided for the course, that is, a degree course with two certificates and the PG course. The admission is conducted on the first cum first service. The institute is in Kothrud, Pune, Maharashtra. Apart from this, the same branch is also in different states, such as West Bengal, Rajasthan, Delhi, and so on.

Experience and Growth at INIFD

Moving forwards, I always knew that I share a keen interest in Fashion design and hence I started shortlisting the institutes according to the subject. As a literature undergraduate student, I decided to go for a master’s course in the same. I got selected based on my marks from my previous college. The aim of studying the subject deeply and making a successful career out of it has been very simple, I wanted to create. According to me, clothing and fabrics are one of the closest things that stay close to a human body, memories, emotions, and so on. This vision made me pursue the subject. I just wanted guidance to gather the knowledge for the same. As a student, this institute helped me to clear my ideas and grow daily step by step.

After entering the subject, I came to realize how the fashion industry works. With different workshops, assignments, dissertation projects, and fashion shows, my knowledge about the course grew. It is also giving us the chance to work with famous designers closely and gain experience in the industry on a further basis. The college also provided me with an internship opportunity, which I got selected and am working on today’s date. Besides, it also has some experienced and supportive faculties.

Reflections and Future Goals

M best experience to date during this course has been participating in the Annual Fashion Show soon to be conducted by the college. I was selected as a team leader by my teachers, and I have been working on the collection for the show. Now, for any fashion student, it is very important to be a part of such shows and I got to be a part of the one, which is one of the best opportunities provided by INIFD to its students. This show’s journey and the making process of the collection have been very challenging yet unique for me on a personal note. While working on it, I came to know about teamwork, responsibilities, deadlines, and so on. Working so closely with a designer on a collection has been a very thrilling experience.  It has put a very strong influence on me and provided me with immense knowledge about the subject. This experience is also going to share a very strong light on my future references, and it is one of the experiences I am going to remember and implement the learnings.  

For me, college or institute was never on a priority list, it was learning, and I chose that. I have always believed that working hard is always fruitful and it can be achieved from anywhere if dedicated. Tomorrow, when I will look back it will never be about the right or wrong decisions whereas it will be more about what I will be taking back from the place. The knowledge that I will be collecting and implementing will be the result of this institute only. Also, I will miss all my faculties, and all assignment nights with friends being under the same pressure, along with all the sleepless nights during the show and all the outings that I was a part of. 

Overall, the first journey of my goal is about to be accomplished and soon the other steps of working towards growth will begin. Till then kudos to enjoying the remaining days of college.
