More than 6.83 lakh vacant posts in Central Government departments: Centre in Lok Sabha

He stated that three recruiting agencies - Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) have recommended for the hiring process to around 1.34 lakh posts during the current year 2019-20.

Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh has informed the Lok Sabha that there were more than 6.83 lakh vacant posts in the different departments of the central government as on March 1, 2018. He referred to the annual report of pay and research unit of the department of expenditure and said that as on March 1, 2018, out of the overall sanctioned strength of 38,02,779 employees, 31,18,956 employees were in position. He was replying in written to a question raised in the lower house of the parliament.

He further informed that vacancies in the central government were caused due to death, promotion, resignation, and retirement, etc. So, the posts falling vacant need to be filled according to the recruitment rules by the corresponding departments/ organisations/ ministries. He stated that three recruiting agencies - Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) have recommended for the hiring process to around 1.34 lakh posts during the current year 2019-20.

The maximum number of recommendations came from RRB numbering 1,16,391. SSC and UPSC made recommendations for 13,995 and 4,399 posts respectively. Apart from this, RRB, Postal Service Board, Ministry of Defence and SSC are likely to fill up 3,10,832 vacant posts inclusive of 27, 562 vacant posts of defence civilians.

In recent times, all departments/ ministries have been asked to take time-bound action to fill the prevailing vacancies in several ministries/departments and their attached/ subordinate offices. To decrease the recruitment cycle, recruiting agencies have shifted to computer-based online test, interview for non-gazetted posts has been withdrawn.
