Applied learning is the best approach to study Hospitality Management, says Harpreet
Since my early school days, I have been an active participant in various inter and intra-level school competitions such as Art and Craft, Basketball, Cooking, etc., and also won some. But what I lacked since the beginning is good communication skills. Punjabi is my regional language and we were always asked to communicate in the same even at School and at home. I scored 80 per cent in Class 12 board exams but was not really confident about the career choices or which stream I wanted to pursue ahead.
Soon after my Class 12 exams, I got to attend a seminar on Hospitality Management where the counsellors and experts talked about the scope of this course ahead. I made up my mind and decided to move ahead with the same course.
I started looking for institutes and universities offering courses in Hospitality Management and there I came to know about Servo Hospitality School. As a part of the admission process, one has to undergo a Group Discussion round and Personal Interview rounds which comprises of three face to face or virtual interview rounds. I had 15 days of time to prepare for the interview rounds and I took the help of Google for the same.
The reason I shortlisted this among other institutes was its international collaborations and affiliations with Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) which happens to be the leading government vocational education and training institution in Europe and OTHM, UK which is regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in England. I am pursuing Level-5 International Advance Diploma in Hotel Management MSCAT, Malta. This is an integrated programme which has leveraged me to work while studying and post-completion of the programme, I will be allowed to work here in Mala full-time basis the work permit. The Hospitality industry nowadays demands international exposure and the School makes sure it happens in the form of an international internship experience.

I feel fortunate to be a part of the first batch at Servo Hospitality School. Since the day I have joined this institute, there have been numerous activities, guest lectures and corporate interactions which now make me feel confident and ready to face the corporate world. The course curriculum here is industry-embedded and has been designed in a way to fulfill the current industry needs. The School follows a blended approach of theory and practical sessions.
The concepts that we study in the classroom, we also practice them as applied learning is the best approach to study. The aim of this kind of approach is to help students become industry-ready.
I like food production class the most which is facilitated by Professor VPS Negi, who has over 30 years of vast experience. Professor Negi is an innovative person who always motivates us to be innovative and experimental in our Baking class. My second most preferred class is Sales and Marketing facilitated by Professor Ravi Singh who is also the Director of the School and General Manager at Ramada Hotel, Dehradun. His sessions are interactive and fun to attend.
For a Hotel Management professional, it's very important to be well-groomed and have fluent communication skills and the School regularly conducts Personality Development sessions. The experts teach us to handle our stage and public fear, how to present ideas to mass gatherings, handle guests, etc.
The future at Servo Hospitality School is full of opportunities. Students pursuing Diploma like me get the opportunity to complete the graduation from MCAST with two-years of work permit after which, students can easily apply for PR. I wish to complete my Level 6 curriculum from MSCAT and then further go for postgraduation studies. Once I have all the international exposure, I wish to come back and start my own bakery in India.
