INIFD students get opportunity to showcase their talent at Lakme Fashion Week, says Mellissa D’souza

I studied Commerce in Class 10 and 11, but I was unsure of what to do in future. All my elders advised me to opt for BCom which would help in getting a job in bank after graduation. I began researching for possible career choices, took aptitude tests, discussed with several people but couldn’t find something that convinced me. I considered studying Fine Arts due to my interest in the field but I was discouraged by many people. I wanted to explore my creative side, so I continued my research and this is when I found Interior Designing. After contemplating the pros and cons, I realised that Interior Designing is the right field for me where I can put my thoughts into execution, express myself through my designs and still get paid based on the efforts put in by me. 

The main criterion of getting into a design college is clearing the entrance exam. My friends had been taking coaching classes for clearing entrance exams for almost a year while I was clueless. I conducted extensive research for colleges that offered design courses such as Pearl Academy, Symbiosis Institute of Design, L. S. Raheja School of Architecture and so on. In these colleges, clearing the entrance exam for admission is essential. In the midst of my research I came across the name INIFD Vashi - International Institute of Fashion Design Vashi, so I began browsing their website and learnt that they offer Interior as well as Fashion Designing courses. I visited their Vashi campus and there got to know that INIFD has got multiple campuses within Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The faculty was very polite and helpful. They patiently explained the courses offered, the fee structure, complete pattern of teaching, numerous workshops conducted, availability of various tools and so on. I was relieved to know that there is no entrance exam conducted by INIFD Vashi which makes their entire admission process smooth.

Most of the subjects taught in Interior Designing are practical subjects wherein every student gets the opportunity to think out-of-the-box and explore their creative side. I have always like the Design Studio lectures where the students are given a project with a briefing and requirements to design the space. All the students get the freedom of bringing their creative side up under the guidance of professional designers as faculty to cater to the needs of all the students at all times. INIFD Vashi, also conducts various workshops and site visits which is an essential part of learning design as students understand the practical working scenarios for designing a space. I have attended numerous workshops such as Asian Paints, Dorma Kaba, Folds Interior Studio, Hafele, Amber Furnitures to name a few. INIFD’s tie-up with IMG Reliance has given wonderful opportunities like the Launchpad, where students of INIFD from all over India get to showcase their talents through designing the set for Lakme Fashion Week. The students at INIFD Vashi, conduct an exhibition annually where they get to explore and exhibit their work in the form of product design, model design or paintings and accessories. INIFD Vashi gives many opportunities which in turn give the exposure that is required by each and every student. All the students ensure that they explore the vast options in the field of design and find a design style that fits their personality while being versatile. The faculty and staff give utmost priority to fulfil the needs of a student while also making sure that they are not being spoon-fed and can stand on their own feet.

After completing my graduation, I wish to pursue my Post-graduation in Interior Designing from INIFD Vashi itself. I would also like to pursue a specialization course which would help me in my career as an Interior Designer.
