President Ram Nath Kovind will visit the college as part of centenary celebrations on November 16 where he will inaugurate three projects – semi-conductor research lab, the community centre and the “Century Gate”.

Punjab Engineering College (PEC) completed its 100 years of existence on November 9. The college was established in Lahore as Mughalpura Technical College in 1921. On November 9, a balloon-hoisting ceremony took place to celebrate the 100 years of its establishment of the campus. The chief guests were Dharam Pal, Adviser to the UT Administrator; Rajendra Gupta, Chairman of Board of Governors; and SS Gill, Technical Education Secretary. 

President Ram Nath Kovind, accompanied by governors of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal as well as chief ministers of the three states, will visit the college as a part of centenary celebrations on November 16. During his visit to Punjab Engineering College, President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate three projects – semi-conductor research lab, the community centre and the “Century Gate”. He is also likely to lay the foundation stone of a boys hostel. 

From Pakistan to Chandigarh 

First set up in Lahore and named Mughalpura Engineering College, the institute was re-established as East Punjab Engineering College on the campus of Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) after Partition. Renamed Punjab Engineering College in 1950 it was later shifted to Chandigarh in 1953. 

With the formation of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the college came under the control of the Government of India through the Chandigarh administration in 1966. PEC offers eight undergraduate programmes and 12 postgraduate programmes, besides PhD programmes in various disciplines of engineering, science and other fields.
