All Punjab Universities postponed their final-year exams until mid-July. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on June 28 announced the postponement of final semester exams in all the universities and colleges of the state until July 15.
While responding to concerns expressed by students and parents on the conduct of examinations amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the minister declared the decision. A state government release cleared that the final decision on the subject will, however, be subject to the new directions/guidelines expected to be released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at any time.
Talking about the decision, Singh said the postponement till July 15 will also give all the stakeholders, especially the universities, time to adapt and align with the new guidelines that will come from the UGC.
The release further stated that the chief minister felt the need to remove confusion from the minds of students, teachers and parents regarding the safe conduct of examinations.
Earlier, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the University Grant Commission (UGC) on April 29, Punjab’s universities took the decision to conduct exams of exit classes in the month of July 2020.
While announcing the exam guidelines UGC then announced that it would review the situation again. However, the decision regarding the conduct of examinations and other academic activities according to the current ongoing pandemic situation is still awaited from the UGC.
The chief minister also pointed out that as all the universities and colleges in Punjab are accredited/affiliated to the UGC, the decision on the exams will depend on the decision taken by the statutory body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Earlier, the vice-chancellors and controllers of exams of Panjab University, Chandigarh; Punjabi University, Patiala; and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, along with state government officials discussed policies regarding examinations and admissions for the next session in universities and colleges of the state through a video-conference on April 29.
During the meeting, the 10-page UGC guideline 2020 and Punjab state COVID exit strategy were discussed.
