At Agharkar Research Institute, researchers have created ‘Hb calculator’, a system based on a mobile app which would help measure blood haemoglobin. This android smartphone app can be put to use in distant rural areas. By means of a number of analyses, the accuracy of the app has been checked and validated. For the testing of anaemia, the app is going to be extremely helpful in resource-limited conditions for accurate and rapid results. Anaemia is a stage where the level of haemoglobin in a human body goes lower than normal. Agharkar Research Institute is an independent organisation of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology.
The process of measuring haemoglobin comprises adding a reagent to the plate, followed by the infusion of a blood sample. By using a camera phone, the formation of colour is captured. A splash screen is launched when clicked on the Hb calculator app icon. A picture of the container with a blank solution is taken and set as the calibration image. Then a picture of the container with a sample solution is taken and assessed. The Hb value (g/dL) for the respective sample is automatically calculated and the result is shown on the screen.
The deficiency of iron in the body is the most common cause of anaemia. This impacts the creation of haemoglobin in the body. A person lacking iron becomes prone to diminished intellectual performance, decreased resistance to infection, developmental delay, and impaired behaviour, etc. These days, diseases pertaining to iron deficiency are being found on a larger scale. This is why the analysis of haemoglobin is one of the most performed analysis in clinical diagnostic procedures.
