For several times, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has been the target of fake rumours. In the latest rumour, it has been targeted by some unknown people who have circulated forged timetable for exams. It created an uproar after some fraudsters shared the timetable on social media. Before this, the varsity had issued a circular on March 27. The circular had deferred all exams until after April 14 when the nationwide lockdown is completed. As per the forged letter, exams of the university were slated to be held after April 5. Mahesh Kakde, exam controller of SPPU, was alerted about the rumours and the forged time table. He lodged an FIR at the Chatuhshringi police station against unknown persons.

Filed on April 2, the FIR refers to sections of the Indian Penal Code related to forgery, cheating, statements creating or encouraging enmity, hatred or ill will between classes, and public nuisance. Over the last fortnight, this is the second such problem that the varsity has had to go through. Misusing the logo of the International Student Centre, an unknown person had forged a letter on March 15. It stated that SPPU had deferred all lectures and affiliated colleges had been told directed to announce holidays between March 20 and 30.

This erupted a day prior to the state government’s guidelines to varsities to cancel lectures. The forged letter put officials in a fix as lectures were still being held. According to SPPU Registrar Prafulla Pawar, they had to issue a clarification through a press note and on the website.
