The first batch of the Urdu foundation course will have 30 students and it will initially function from the Hindi department.

The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) academic year 2020-21 introduces a one-year foundation course in Urdu. Any student who has completed class 10 can apply for the course. The course aims to impart reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the Urdu language.

The university’s head of the Hindi department, Sadanand Bhosale stated that the course is being funded by the university and Pune being a cultural city can attract many working professionals for the course who wants to learn a new language or enhance their skills in the Urdu language. He also added that people who have an interest in ghazal, poetry, or history have a high affinity for Urdu.

Advocate and social activist, Saleem Shaikh proposed the idea of starting a course in Urdu to the SPPU vice-chancellor. He believes that nowadays, even non-Muslims want to learn and enhance their skills in Urdu poetry, Shayari, etc. The advocate further added that there was an Urdu department at the University of Pune about 40 years ago. The idea of introducing a course in Urdu is unique and will benefit many as the University has decided to teach Urdu right from the alphabet.

The first batch of the Urdu foundation course will have 30 students and it will initially function from the Hindi department. There will be two contractual teachers and visiting professors from different colleges to teach the batch. The syllabus for the course has already been framed and the faculty believes that it will enhance job opportunities by imparting translational knowledge. The official notification about the admission process of the course will soon be uploaded on the university’s official website.

The university has set a committee to work out the feasibility of the course. The committee consists of subject experts like Azmat Dalai, Abdul Bari, Uzma Tasneem to handle the implementation of the course.
