In a conversation with Shiksha.com, Vice Principal of IIFT Bangalore - Indian Institute of Fashion Technology Barani Andal talks in detail about their teaching methodology and practices that the institute has adopted to help students prepare for the corporate world. It includes industrial visits, guest lectures, encouraging entrepreneurship skills, etc. Barani has over 14 years of rich industry and academia experience.

Read the excerpts of the interview below:

Q: What are the salient features of teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

A: The most important component of teaching methodology is the delivery of the content. The classes are to be conducted in a way that the student remembers the concept or life long. For that to happen, we have:

  • Creative teaching techniques, that help to stimulate creativity. This includes visual exercises that will excite students and capture their interest

Audio and video tools, that help supplement textbooks during our classroom sessions. That includes videos and movies to present case-based studies

  • Real-world teaching helps in facilitating learning by relating and demonstrating through real-world happenings in industries and fashion sectors which will make it easy for students to understand and learn. It will spark their interest and get the students excited and involved.
  • Brainstorming sessions are encouraged in our classrooms in every lecture. It is a great way to get the creativity flowing.

Q: How are you preparing your students to be industry-ready?

A: All students are given equal opportunity to do internships from the very first year in different fields of fashion such as manufacturing sector, retail sector and so on which will help them get a wide knowledge about the industry while they learn.

They are also taken for regular industrial visits to different industries to gain knowledge about their functioning during their course.

IIFT allows students to be aware of current trends in the fashion field by participating in workshops and seminars which are facilitated by fashion experts.

This bridges the gap between the industry and institution and will enable the students to become industry-ready.

Q: What qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

A: The qualities that we look forward in our students are:

  • Creative skills
  • Communication skills
  • Zeal to learn continuously
  • Passionate about fashion

These are the qualities that we look for at the time of admissions and same can help students to grow in their career.

Q: How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirement?

A: We regularly update our curriculum according to industry requirements, we continuously research and take feedback from the fashion experts on the changes and the latest trends in the fashion field and experts from textile industries which is carefully reviewed and added as a part of our syllabus.

Q: Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science and entrepreneurship? How? Could you cite some examples of these?

A: Yes, we are receptive to innovation, technology and science. We always encourage students to think out of the box and be different. We encourage entrepreneurship by giving them opportunities to set up their own designer boutique in college while learning. It gives them hands-on experience to start their own business immediately after the course.
