Telangana to begin 100-day reading campaign for school students
Under the programme called READ (Read, Enjoy and Develop), teachers will have to ensure students read appropriate books according to their age in the school library every day.
Telangana School Education Department has announced that it has decided to launch a 100-day reading campaign for students of Classes 1 to 9 across the state from today. The main aim behind the campaign is to instill reading habits as well as to improve basic reading skills among students.
Under the programme called READ (Read, Enjoy and Develop), teachers will have to ensure students read appropriate books according to their age in the school library every day. Schools will have to allocate one library period for the selected classes, as per the reports. The schools have been directed to form a committee of five students for each class in high school and for primary school. The task of the committee would be to monitor the reading habits of students, issue books and maintain their records. It will also display a list of fluent readers to encourage other students.
Schools will reportedly have been instructed to organize a library week from February 14 to 21 and celebrate Mother Language Day on February 21. The schools have been further instructed to organise a reading competition every Saturday and a reading festival every month which will include parents, community members and School Management Committee, according to the report.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had launched the 100-day Reading Campaign '‘Padhe Bharat’ to improve the learning levels of students. The campaign has been launched with an aim to improve the learning levels of students as it develops creativity, critical thinking, vocabulary and the ability to express both verbally and in writing. It helps children to relate to their surroundings and real-life situation, the officials said.
