Education minister Partha Chatterjee on April 30 claimed that the UGC guidelines 2020 released for university examinations and academic calendar for the new session 2020-21 apparently reflects the recommendations made by the West Bengal government.

Education minister Partha Chatterjee on April 30 claimed that the UGC guidelines 2020 released for university examinations and academic calendar for the new session 2020-21 apparently reflects the recommendations made by the West Bengal government on issues such as conducting terminal examinations in the post-lockdown period.

According to the reports, Mr Chatterjee stated that the West Bengal government has taken note of the contents of the letter that all state universities have received the University Grants Commission (UGC). Talking about the released guidelines, the minister further said, "By the first look, apparently it seems several recommendations and suggestions made by us through official correspondence and discussions with the Union education minister have been retained in this UGC letter.”

Mr Chatterjee claimed that the Commission also endorsed the earlier announcement made by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the commencement of only final semester exams in its guidelines. The minister said the Higher Education Department is seeking the opinion of the vice-chancellors on the subject. Talking further about the guidelines, the education minister added, "The universities will take a decision in accordance with their own rules and situation and inform the department. The department will then give the final approval after talking to the chief minister," he said.

UGC formed two expert committees to prepare reports on examinations and academic calendar to be followed in the new academic session 2020-21. Based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee, the Commission released its guidelines for the Universities on April 29, 2020.
