It is a minority education institution based on religion but admits students without any discrimination based on religion. St. Xavier’s College is affiliated with Ranchi University and gained the 'College with Potential for Excellence' status in 2006.

St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi offers 38 courses in all disciplines of Arts, Science and Commerce.  And this leads to each department having its own colour-coded uniform to represent its distinctiveness. However, the entire college follows a uniform code of formal shirt and pants regardless of gender. The rules regarding footwear are not mentioned but students are expected to make formal choices.

Dress in Summer Season- In summers, the college edicts for a formal shirt and pants (for girls and boys) with a tie or salwar and kameez (for girls) according to their respective departments.

Saturdays- Saturdays are open days and students can opt for any informal attire as per their choice. Casuals are allowed but students are expected to maintain the decorum and follow the instructions of the institution.

Laboratories- Inside the laboratories, an overcoat along with protective glasses (if required) are advised to wear.

Cultural Events- For college fests or other cultural events, the dress code is set according to the events beforehand and students are informed about that. However, even if they are allowed to wear casuals, sleeveless dresses or blouses are a big no.

Sports Events- St. Xavier’s College provides proper attires according to the sports criteria and the needs of the students.

ID Cards- Each admitted student is provided with an identity card which is a proof and token of their entry inside the college premises. Without ID cards the students are not allowed to enter the premises and are advised to wear their ID Cards all the time while they are in the campus. They might be asked to show their identity even while entering the campus building.

Some Important Points about Dress Code:

6) One-piece dresses, body cons, ripped jeans/ tops or any such attire is not allowed inside the college premises.

7) Sleeveless dresses are not allowed in campus, neither on Saturdays nor on any event day.

8) Not all departments have a tie in their uniform.

9) Salwar-kameez is allowed only in certain departments under certain circumstances.

10) There is no rule regarding hair-do and so the students are free to experiment with their hairstyles.

11) Strict actions may be taken against students not following the dress code and violating the college conduct.
