The trainee teachers are required to learn and observe from their everyday lives for the successful completion of the project.

Sanghamitra B.Ed College in Ranchi is a Buddhist religious minority college affiliated with Ranchi University. The college follows the two-year degree program and syllabus prescribed by Ranchi University for a regular B.Ed degree. For B.Ed the college also offers live projects and internships for the students. The internship includes real-time engagement with school students as a teacher. This means that the trainee teachers are sent to schools, where they get to manage classes and teach. The internship, however, is not paid.

Internships for B.Ed Students

The major aspect of the teacher-training course at the college is the school internship. The school internship is for a minimum period of 20 weeks. This 20-week internship is divided into two years; four weeks of internship in the first year and the remaining 16 weeks in the second year. Attendance during this training or internship or live project is equally important. A minimum of 90% attendance is required for successful completion of the School Internship.

During the internship in the first year of the course, which is of four weeks, the initial phase of one week is allotted to the interns for observing a classroom with a regular teacher. This includes peer observations, teacher observations and faculty observations of practice lessons. Additionally, the intern teacher observes at least 10 lessons in each school subject. This means that the first week of the internship is only an observatory training period and in the remaining weeks, the teacher learns things practically. The second year of the course allows interns to practice for a good 16 weeks, which is enough to develop wisdom as a teacher.

During the entire span of the School Internship the teachers have to make a lesson plan for each day, which is also an important part of teacher training. The lesson plan consists of the detailed structure of the lesson about how the teacher is going to deliver his/her topic in the class the next day. Basically, this prepares the teacher beforehand with the questions as well as the answers and the assumed classroom scenario.

Besides the lesson plan, the students also have to make various course-related projects and projects related to EPC (Enhancing Professional Capabilities). While the course-related projects are related to theories only, the projects of EPC are quite interesting. As the name suggests, Enhancing Professional Capabilities, these projects are related to common life topics and are also concerned with the overall development of the students. The topics of the EPC are mostly based on practical life skills, self-development and field tasks. There are four EPC courses to be covered in the entire course curriculum, three in the first year and one in the second. The first three EPC courses are on-field tasks, observation and notes, drama and arts and understanding of ICT. The last one consists of Yoga and similar practices for a healthy life. The trainee teachers are required to learn and observe from their everyday lives for the successful completion of the project. Other than this, there is one more Optical course which is either Gardening or Tailoring. Students can choose any one of the courses. This also involves a lot of learning and practice for proper completion of the project related to this.

Significance of Projects in B.Ed Course

Projects play an important role in determining the academic performance of the students as the B.Ed course is more about learning practically than theoretically. There are tons of things that a teacher needs to learn so that they can guide their students in the best way possible. The fieldwork, projects and assignments in the first year together consist of 65 marks other than the theory paper. In the second year, this total pars up to 650 marks including the School Internship, projects and assignments related to the courses.
