Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is mandatory test to get an admission for undergraduate programme into any college in the USA. SAT test is conducted by USA-based "College Board", which sets questions, conducts test, and sends score reports to each examinee.

Every college in America or in other countries accepts the SAT or Subject Test as a part of their selection procedure. Approximately, more than two million students take the SAT test every year.

SAT is held 6 times in a year: May, June, October, November, December and January.

Who can appear for SAT?

SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors.Candidates who have completed their 12 years of school education successfully from any recognized Indian board or university can take SAT for admission in the different streams available in to various colleges.

SAT exam pattern:

SAT is offered in two formats:

  • SAT Reasoning Tests
  • SAT Subject Tests

The SAT Reasoning Test helps in measuring student's critical thinking ability to analyze and solve problems as needed in college while the Subject Tests evaluates the level of knowledge of a student in a particular subject. Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with two writing sub scores for multiple-choice and the essay.

Candidates can take the test as many times as they want. The score report of candidates shows the current test score, in addition to scores for up to six SAT I and six Subject Test administrations. The total testing time for the SAT I is 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Candidates who want to pursue their Bachelor's programme from US, Canada, UK or any foreign country will most likely have to clear the SAT exam to prove their level of knowledge in related subjects and their aptitude to excel in higher studies.

Apart from SAT test, high school grades are also very important to get an admission in college. Most students take the SAT once or twice.

There are no criteria of minimum marks specified for appearing in the SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests, but several colleges need a good SAT score along with a good academic record.
