COVID-19 Impact: Mumbai colleges move online to prepare syllabus, clear students' doubts

Colleges around Mumbai have started opting for e-learning methods to help students with their doubts and prepare them for their upcoming exam. Teachers have also started utlising online portals to make the curricula and make study material for the upcoming academic session.

With educational institutions around the country shutting down until March 31 due to coronavirus outbreak, colleges in Mumbai have started using online portals to make the curricula and update the study material for the new academic session.  

Many colleges in the city have also started providing online doubt-clearing classes and counselling to students.

The Board of Studies of Mithibai College is organising video conferences every day in order to set up the curriculum and update the study material for the upcoming new academic session. This year, the college administration is also working round the clock to set up e-content for students. The new syllabus is scheduled to be put forward on April 1 at the academic council's meeting. 

We are looking forward to all the possibility of holding the academic council meeting online too, said Rajpal Hande, Principal, Mithibai College. 

Teachers have started using Google Classroom, to help students clear their doubts and prepare for the upcoming viva exams scheduled to be held in April.

SIES College teachers have also started utilising the online portals to help students with their studies. 

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), faculties are also making efforts to start work online of setting up of the syllabus for the upcoming academic year.

The University of Mumbai has also issued a notification to its faculty and researchers to start taking online classes, create online content as well as a syllabus for the next session.

Responding to the situation where colleges and universities are opting for online portals for teaching students, Kishore Peshori, Principal, Mithibai Motiram Kundnani College of Commerce and Economics (MMK college) said we may soon be opting for Massive Open Online Course model (MOOC), which offers free online courses curated by the teachers to students until the situation of coronavirus outbreak comes under control. 

The total number of coronavirus cases in India today crossed the 500-mark, taking the death toll to 10. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of positive coronavirus cases in the country followed by Kerala.
