IIT Guwahati
Spread over 285 hectares plot on the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is known to offer its students sunsets and sunrises which are worth boasting about. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side and hills and vast open spaces on other, IIT Guwahati’s campus provides an ideal setting for learning as well relaxing to students.
Apart from the scenic beauty, IIT Guwahati is known to house many migratory birds which tend to make the campus all the more interesting.
Established in 1994, IIT Guwahati “has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes”, as informed by the official website.
IIT Roorkee
IIT Roorkee also has a temple, a mosque and a church inside the campus. The library of the college is spread over four floors and the hostels have modern facilities and some of them are even 7-8 stories high.
For the sport lovers the college offers an Olympic size swimming pool, synthetic basketball courts, cricket ground, lawn tennis courts, football ground as well as hockey grounds.
IIT Roorkee also has an army quarters inside the campus for NCC practice.
Forest Research Institute
Forest Research Institute, nestled in the Doon Valley was designed by CG Blomfield in Greeko Roman Architecture.
Spread over an approximate area of 1300 acres, Forest Research Institute’s campus comprises of lush green forests along with well maintained gardens. Students share that the recently released Karan Johar movie – Student of the Year as well as Paan Singh Tomar was shot here.
Forest Research Institute’s campus also houses the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, where officer trainees joining the Indian Forest Service undergo two years of compulsory training.
Indian Institute of Science
The official website states, “The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore, generously donated by the Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907”.
Known to have classical architecture, IISc’s main building which includes the administration and faculty hall has a monument of JN Tata in front of it. This monument was the work of Gilbert Bayes. The building of the college which is one of the prominent landmarks of Bangalore was designed by CF Stevens and Company of Bombay in 1912-1913.
IISc’s buildings for the metallurgy and aerospace department were designed by the German architect Otto Königsberger in the 1940s.
The campus houses more than 40 departments marked by routes such as the Gulmohar Marg, the Mahogany Marg, the Badami Marg, the Tala Marg, the Ashoka Marg, the Nilgiri Marg, the Silver Oak Marg, the Amra Marg and the Arjuna Marg.
The Institute is fully residential and spreads over 400 acres of land situated in the heart of Bangalore city. The campus features six cafeterias, a gymkhana, football and cricket ground, four dining messes, one multicuisine family restaurant, nine men's and five women's hostels, an air strip, a library, two shopping centers and residence areas for faculty and other staff members.
NIT Srinagar
Located in the Kashmir valley surrounded by the scenic Himalayan ranges, “NIT Srinagar is a residential Institute with accommodation facility in Hostels and Staff-Quarters. There are four Boys and one Girls hostel which swallops about 1500 boys and 200 girls” as informed by the official website.
The website also informs that the facilities and amenities available at the institution include “NCC, NSS, Bank, Shopping Complex, Recreational Centre, Dispensary with Ambulance, Guest House, Students Activity Centre, Gymnasium, Internet Centre, Telephone Booths, Fax Services, Diesel Generator, Bus Facility”.
Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology
“The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was established in 1997 as a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University and is approved by AICTE. SMIT had been accreditated for engineering disciplines by National Board of Accreditation dated 22 January 2008”, states the official website.
RMK Engineering College
Established in 1995, RMK Engineering College located in Chennai is spread over 60 acres of land. The college has an energy park, set up with funding from TEDA, which use solar energy for pumping water and lighting some areas of the campus.
The official websites informs that, “The entire campus has landscaping with green grass, ornamental plants, and shady trees making the campus very green and beautiful. The college was adjudged by the Rotary Club of Chennai as the Most Green & Clean Campus in the year 2003. The college is very proud of this green and pollution-free ambience which has been conducive to a good educational ambience”.
Extensive water harvesting activity has been undertaken at various parts of the campus, resulting in very high ground water levels. Apart from this, recycling of waste water also takes place on campus wherein water from bathrooms and kitchen cleaning areas is re-used for gardening purposes.
IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur has 21 student hostels which are located on either side of Scholars Avenue and the campus has a total of 55 kilometres of roadways.
Well the most talked about and picturesque place at IIT Kharagpur is the Technology Students' Gymkhana which “is the nerve center for sports, cultural and social activities. It has a number of indoor and outdoor stadia, a modern swimming pool and a gymnasium. Music Society, Film Society, Dramatics Society, Aquatics Society and many more special interest groups are supported by the Gymkhana”, states the official website. There is also a lake and a garden around IIT Kharagpur’s Gymkhana, the view of which is absolutely breathtaking.
Other places to visit on campus are Nehru Museum, Hijli Shahid Bhavan, Old Prison Cells and Martyrs Memorial.
BITS Pilani Goa
The BITS Pilani Goa Campus was designed by the Indian arm of the RSP design group.
The official website informs that the campus encompasses, “Spacious labs, state of the art classrooms with soundproof acoustics, modern furniture, computer labs with internet facility and library”. Other facilities on campus include “A shopping complex with departmental store, cafeteria, bank and all other utility shops provide needful support to the campus inmates. The campus also has a Medical Centre with two doctors, pharmacist and other support staff who provide round the clock medical coverage to all the residents of the institute.”
IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay’s academic area mainly comprises of the main building, various departmental annexes and auditoriums. All department annexes are connected by a corridor which is called the – Infinite Corridor.
Students reveal that IIT Bombay has small hills such as Sameer hill which lie quite near to the lakes and the climb from the lakes to these hills is an amazing experience.
IIT Bombay lies very close to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and due to this there have been sightings of panthers, Leopards and Gharial crocodiles along the banks of Powai lake.
The institute has two swimming pools, football ground, hockey ground, cricket ground as well as tennis, basketball, squash and volleyball courts. It also has a Students' Activity Center (SAC) for various cultural and other extracurricular activities. IIT Bombay has a total of 15 hostels for students.
