Q. Congratulations on your achievement. So how do you feel being the topper of JEE Advanced 2017? Did you expect it?
I was expecting a rank in the Top 5 so it is a bit disheartening. But yes falling in the Top 15 list is also an achievement. I am happy with my results and so are my parents.
Q. Which board and school are you from? What was your XII Board marks?
I have completed my schooling from APEEJAY School, Pitampura – Delhi. It was a CBSE board school and my score in class 12th boards was 97.2%. For PCM, the aggregate was 99%.
Q. What is your subject wise and overall score?
Q. How long have you been preparing? What was your study plan for JEE Advanced 2017? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for JEE?
I have been a part of FIITJEE from class 7th and since then I have been preparing for various competitive exams. I bagged a Rank 3 in KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna). Going further, I also appeared for various other Olympiads.
I always made sure to revise everything that was taught in the coaching throughout the day. In case of doubts I used to consult my teachers the very next day. I even solved a lot of sample papers to practice the type of questions given in the examination.
According to me, 2-3 years are enough for a candidate. If one needs more time then it is their requirement but as per my analysis, 2-3 years are more than enough to thorough the subjects.
Q. How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
My target has always been JEE Advanced. I felt that the syllabus for both the exams is almost the same. The only difference is of a few topics like Semiconductors, Microscopes, and Telescopes in Physics, then Binomial distributions and Statistics. These topics are included in JEE Mains but not in JEE Advanced.
Q. What was your JEE Main 2017 rank and score?
I appeared for JEE Mains 2017 in offline mode. My JEE Main 2017 score was 330 and the All India Rank was 37
Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?
I requested my teachers at FIITJEE to provide me with the practice sheets in specific topics. These were the topics that required more practice in order to eliminate doubts.
Q. Have you taken any other exams besides JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
I appeared for BITSAT 2017 and my score was 418/450.
Q. Did you take coaching? Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE?
As told earlier, I am studying with FIITJEE since class 7th Coaching is required as per my analysis. I feel that we tend to perform better when under proper guidance and this guidance can only be provided by skilled teachers at coaching institutes. I myself have never heard about students who have managed to top JEE without any coaching or external assistance. It may not be officially mandatory but of course important and required in order to perform better.
Q. Did you take up mock tests and sample papers? Do you think practicing from previous years question papers help and how?
I have taken numerous mock tests and sample papers. Previous year papers are important to solve as they give you an idea about the exam pattern. They help you to thorough your preparation for the exam. PYP’s also helps the candidate in identifying that is their preparation enough to appear for actual exam or still there is a scope of improvement.
Q. Any important books that you would suggest for future aspirants.
Instead of books, I would suggest students to revise the notes given by their coaching institute. I myself also practiced the same strategy for the exam preparation.
Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?
I aim to pursue with BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay. The second priority would be IIT-Delhi.
Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?
I would suggest students to precise more PYPs and sample papers. Devote more time to topics that they consider difficult to understand. Also, prefer notes given by coaching institutes over reference books.
Q. Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering?
I think I have no answer to this. I just wish to become an engineering and this was my dream since class 7th. I used to see my elder brother preparing for JEE and also read some of his books. This helped me develop interest in this filed.
Q. Tell us about your family.
Both my parents are CA’s(Chartered Accountants) and my elder brother is pursuing with a 5 year dual degree MSc in Economics and Computer Science engineering from BITS Pilani.
Q. What are your future plans?
I am not sure about my future plans at all. Maybe I will pursue with higher studies and then seek a job. I am interested in artificial intelligence and machinery so I may pursue PhD in the same.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies.
I am a very techie kind of person since the very beginning. Besides that, I love watching movies, going for a jog to take some fresh air and also swim sometimes to relax my mind.
