JEE Main 2017 Results: Reasons behind low cut-offs decoded
The JEE Main 2017 cut offs to appear for JEE Advanced hit an all-time low at 81 for general candidates this year; surprising students and experts alike. Low cut-offs are indeed a good news for students as the possibility to get through JEE Advanced has increased. However, it will have little effect on admissions.
Though the cut-offs have been declining over the past few years but a dip of 19 marks for general candidates came as a surprise this year. To find out possible reasons behind the low cut-offs, we spoke to experts and students.

According to FIITJEE expert, Ramesh Batlish, the decrease in cut-offs was primarily to accommodate the additional 20,000 students who will qualify for JEE Advanced 2017. This year 2.2 lakh students across categories will qualify for JEE Advanced.
“This will have little effect as more students will qualify and get selected for admissions to IITs as well as NITs. Seats will not remain vacant. There will be no major effect on top rankers”, he added.
