Visit any exam related forum, Facebook pages or discussion thread, you would come across such questions doing rounds and engineering aspirants are increasingly searching for answers to these queries.
It’s a known fact that different engineering entrance exams such as JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, SRMEEE(Sri Ramaswamy Engineering Entrance Examination) etc, have a different and distinct marking system from one another.
In an effort to address this particular concern of students, shiksha.com brings you the exam pattern and marking system/scheme of some of the most important engineering entrance exams , here, all at one place.
JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Main:
JEE Main comprises of two papers: Paper 1 for B.Tech courses and Paper 2 for B.Arch courses. While Paper 1 can be taken in both online and offline mode, Paper 2 is available only as Pen & Paper Based Test
Paper 1: The question paper is divided into three sections (subjects) - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Students will be required to answer 30 questions from each subject making the total number of questions to be answered as 90. Since, the question paper will encompass multiple choice questions(MCQs), students will have to choose a correct response out of the four responses.
For every correct answer, students will be awarded four marks/per question while for every wrong answer, ¼ (one fourth) of the total marks of the question would be deducted. No marks will be deducted if the question is left unanswered.
Paper 2: The B.Arch paper is divided into three parts:
- Part I: Part I comprises questions from mathematics. There are 30 objective questions for 120 marks.
- Part II: This will be an aptitude test covering general awareness, reasoning and analytical skills with 50 objective questions for 200 marks.
- Part III: This will be a drawing test with two questions for 70 marks.
Both the papers are 3 hour long.
Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will comprise three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The questions papers will be printed separately in English and in Hindi. The candidates will have to specify their preferred language of the question paper while registering for the exam online. Both papers will have only objective type questions for which the answers need to be marks on an ORS (Optical Response Sheet). The questions are designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates. There is a prescribed syllabus for the three subjects.
The pattern of the papers, marking pattern and the total marks are not revealed. But in some sections, incorrect answers may be awarded with negative marks.
BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Aptitude Test):
The BITSAT 2014 paper will comprise 150 questions spread over four sections in totality. Here is the break-up:

This three hour exam will comprise multiple choice questions with four options, only one being correct. Three marks are awarded for every correct answer while every incorrect question fetches –1 mark.
Aspirants have the option to skip questions/ mark questions for further 'review'. They can go back and change any of their answers among the 150 questions, however, are not allowed to opt for more than one option as correct answer. Please note that the question paper will be in English only.
Additional Questions:
Unlike any other engineering exam, students in BITSAT have a chance to score higher. If an aspirant is able to answer all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), he/she can attempt 12 (twelve) additional questions (if there is still time left). These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics only; with four questions from each part. But, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he/ she cannot go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions.
