Will JEE Main & Advanced Stay Next Year?
The process of admissions to popular engineering colleges in the country might undergo a major revamp coming October. According to latest report, the HRD ministry is planning to set up a National Authority for Testing (NAT) for conducting a new entrance examination from October, 2016. The new exam is expected to replace the two-tier national entrance exam - JEE Main and JEE Advanced - with a single Joint Entrance Examination for admissions to the engineering colleges in India.

What is National Authority for Testing (NAT)?
- NAT is a testing authority which will hold exams on the lines of SAT to generate general aptitude score. This score will be used for JEE(Joint Entrance Examination).
- The NAT will be established only after approval from the Union cabinet. It will then be registered as an independent society under the HRD ministry.
- NAT will aim to test the logical and analytical abilities of students rather than knowledge on subjects. It also intends to standardise the test and reduce the dependency of engineering students on coaching institutes.
- The Service is expected be set up by October, 2016 to screen students aiming for admissions in 2017.
Once set up, NAT will be holding a new entrance exam. Here are some of the key highlights of the exam:
- The new exam, expected to be conducted by NAT, will replace JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
- The exam will be held online four times a year.
- Through the exam, as many as four lakh students will be shortlisted for JEE.
- The pattern of this new exam will be the same as the current JEE Advanced exam. It will test an aspirant's knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics.
- The score will be used for admission to IITs and NITs.
- Once the JEE is conducted, ranks will be issued to 40,000+ students. These students can then seek admission to IITs and NITs based on a common counselling.
