DU colleges attract top placements
By Biswamitra
Most of the time MBA and engineering institutions are in the news for record placements. However, graduate courses from Delhi University and other universities are also attracting employers' attention. Students of commerce are especially in demand by banks. Freshers in commerce arena are being picked up at hefty starting salaries.
Six Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) undergraduate students got top job offers from Deutsche Bank with a salary package of Rs 16.5 lakh per annum. This is the highest at SRCC this year. CS Sharma, professor in charge of placements at SRCC told The Economic Times that the package includes a fixed salary of Rs 10.5 lakh, a joining bonus of Rs 3 lakh and a performance bonus of Rs 3 lakh per annum. The fields in which the bank has offered jobs to the six undergraduates are global markets and corporate finance.
Deutsche Bank has made offers to two SRCC students in the past two years. Last year, Shrey Gupta of SRCC bagged the highest salary package in DU at Rs 39 lakh even breaking the record of his senior Adit Mathur, who was offered an annual pay of Rs 32-lakh and the highest in 2010.The deal included training in London and posting at a global location.
The bank was unavailable for comment on its recruitment plans from undergraduate colleges. However, it seems that SRCC has outperformed other colleges owing to its high cut-off and customary quality education.
Other recruiters include consulting firms like McKinsey & Co, Bain & Co, Deloitte India and KPMG. Annual package offered by these companies ranges between Rs 2.2 lakh and Rs 8 lakh. Till now, 24 SRCC students have been hired by KPMG alone and the recruitment process is expected to continue till April. Apart from SRCC, Deutsche Bank has also visited Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) and St Stephen's College; however no offers have been confirmed so far at these colleges.
In another placement spree at Delhi University, 75 Hans Raj undergraduates have received offers from companies such as Google India, Ernst & Young, Deloitte India, Milestone Interactive and Verity Knowledge Solutions. In an India Times report, Devender Kundalia, a placement coordinator at the college asserts that another 25-30 offers are in the process of getting finalized. The annual packages offered so far ranges between Rs 2.4 lakh and Rs 5.6 lakh. Another 30 to 40 students at Jesus & Mary College have also been placed with a salary package of up to Rs 4.5 lakh per annum.
On the other hand, Colleges in Mumbai have a slightly different and a gloomy story as far as job offers from such companies are concerned as placements for undergraduate students do not seem to be attracting such hefty pay packages.
The discrepancy in the Delhi-Mumbai scenario may be because of the employer's belief that the best lot of students are at SRCC. NS Rajan, partner & global leader - people and organization at Ernst & Young, shared his view with The Economic Times on SRCC which demanded 100% marks for science students in its ‘first list' cut-off. He reveals that employers are more likely to be inclined towards average students from SRCC than on those at colleges with a lower cut-off. (Read More...)
