Follow these points and crack GD in the first attempt
By: Evlyn Fernandes
Conduct research, keep abreast with the latest events, stay focussed, listen carefully, and speak politely in the group discussion to clear the GD.
Group Discussion (GD) is common in the corporate world. Even before taking the first step towards it, i.e. enrolling for an MBA course, one has to pass this phase. It is quite different from the normal one – on- one interview. The group discussion is the idea that the interview is conducted in groups. The groupings maybe with ‘n’ number of people depending upon their choice.
However, as per my research and experience, the candidates are mostly clubbed in the groups of four to six. This grouping is preferable as going beyond six will hinder the focus of the judge. Keeping the number low allows them to spot the potential of the students in that group. The topic for discussion is given on the spot to check the reasoning power of the candidates. One has to present their views stating the pros and cons of the given topic.
The most important part is to refrain from interrupting other candidates while discussing the topic and at the same time, one should not hesitate to present their opinions as the interviewer might take the cue that the candidate is underconfident.
Every candidate must go through some articles on general topics or the topic related to the subject before going for the GD. The students should look up to the internet, keep a tab on the current situation in the country as well as around the world. One could also refer to some business books to gain insights about the subject. Also, research about the current scenario could come in handy when asked about accurate data.
For example, if the panellist asks about the percentage of people who opt for an MBA after graduation in India, that is when statistics come to the rescue. ‘For a group discussion, it is always suggested to focus more on statistics in any area so that one could have valid facts and figures while answering the questions asked. Besides, it does not harm to get some extra knowledge about anything. The panel might judge the candidate based on their requirements.
They also observe the way one is speaking, their gestures, body language and so on. So, the candidates should keep in mind even their slightest movement is captured and noted by them. There is no rule book for how to have a successful group discussion. The key is one needs to prepare themselves thoroughly, as a little research might help and rest all depends upon how well is their reasoning power. The basic tips I can give from my experience is to carry the right attitude, not to be hesitant while answering and maintain the right posture to impress the panellist, however, do not neglect the fact that ‘knowledge is power’ and one has to work upon expanding this knowledge if they choose to do well in any sphere of life.
