UPES, Dehradun

The journey of life begins just after class 10 where a student has to choose a stream of education in which he or she wishes to make their future. Likewise, my journey of life also began after class 10 when I had to choose the right path for myself. As I wanted to gain technical knowledge and wanted to do BTech so I chose Science as my stream in Class 11 and 12.

I successfully completed class 12 but realized that the main journey of life starts after that; when I had to think what I have to actually do. I noticed that I had started losing interest in B Tech, as I wanted to do something different and out of the box. Something, which I could pursue with full passion. After thinking a lot, I came to a conclusion that I wanted to do a Management course.

My wish to do something out of the box took me to University of Petroleum and Energy (UPES), Dehradun. I visited the university to know more about it and I was so excited to know that this university offers so many domain specific courses to the students who are interested in studying niche courses. My interest in Oil and Natural Gas sector made me take up BBA in Oil and Gas Marketing. After that I got to know that this university is the first in Asia to offer BBA in Oil and Gas Marketing.

How I cracked my college admission

I had crossed the first stage successfully by choosing the right track for myself. To pursue BBA in Oil and Gas Marketing at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, filling the application form was not enough. I had to take an entrance exam and then clear the Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD/PI) round.

I began to prepare for my interview and for that I started reading English newspaper as my spoken English was not too fluent and started reading some General Knowledge topics related to my course. After sometime, I realized the change in me. I started speaking English fluently.

The GD/PI day finally arrived. All the students assembled for a short introduction session with the interviewer. This activity was done to make the candidates comfortable before the real interview. Our interviewer was none other than the Director of UPES.

Students were called in groups for GD/PI and were sent back after completing. My turn came after 2-3 rounds, I and 9 other students were called inside the meeting room where the interviewer was already present. We were given the topic, “Should India be a Democratic Country” for the GD. At that time, I knew only one thing, “first impression is the last one”, so I just started the group discussion and at the last everyone agreed with my arguments. My GD went well and I gained a lot of confidence from that. During PI, I answered all the questions honestly and confidently. Hence, I got selected for the programme.

What I learned in my college

Just like sunshine after heavy rain, my life totally changed after I joined UPES.

I always wanted to be a part of an institution which was different from others and UPSE proved to be one such on the very first day itself. On the first day of college, orientation was held for new students. The best part of the orientation programme was that it was designed in such a way that each student got familiar with all the students of their programme.

UPES, offers something new to us every day. From the second day our Personality Enhancement Programme began. Its duration was 3 days. In the Personality Enhancement Programme, we were taught how to overcome stage fear and to face every situation bravely.  For that, we performed various activities, made presentation and participated in many group activities. In this new journey, I made many new friends too.

I knew that only doing theoretical study will not lead me towards success

In my college hours I attend all my lectures like a normal student and participate in class discussion and practicals. Now I have completed one year in college.

I knew that only doing theoretical study will not lead me towards success, so I decided to join a club, “Quizzards Club” By being a part of this club, I learnt many management lessons and how The quiz club”. There I learnt many management works and got to know how conduct an event. From then, I started utilizing my leisure time in such activities.

Right now, I am part of 4 clubs including Rotaract, Quizzards, Manthan the Marketing Club and Petrotech. I am also a part of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibilities) group of my college.

In my winter vacation I did internship of BMO offered by MSME Delhi. I have also done a technical course in Simesic Pipe phase software followed by PST programme. I have also organized many events in my college and also been a part of core committee. I was a part of UPES Business Conclave 2018 as well, which was held recently.

All these things have increased my confidence level and fueled me with passion and energy to move further without taking a break.
