The government of Nepal has made yoga education mandatory for school children to promote a healthy lifestyle among students. Yoga courses have been designed for classes 9 to 12 by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Reportedly, through integrated approach certain topics about yoga will be included as part of the compulsory subjects like English and Nepali.
The students, however, will be given a choice between Yoga, Ayurveda and Natural Medicine as an optional subject at the school level, said the Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Krishna Prasad Kapri. He also said that the schools should be willing to teach these courses as optional subject.
The courses will have credits similar to the other subjects. These courses will be implemented from the upcoming academic sessions at schools.
Curriculum for the three-year vocational course on ‘Technical School Leaving Certificate in Yoga, Ayurveda and Naturopathy’ has also been designed. It will be taught under the three-year diploma programme under the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training. The courses will help the students learn about yoga and its importance. It will also instil moral values in the students and thereby help them in maintaining their mental health.
Kapri also said that Yoga, Ayurveda and Naturopathy will also be helpful in further research.
