The CBSE syllabus reduction affected all subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology which are important as well as critical for the students who want to appear for engineering and medical entrance exams next year i.e. JEE Main 2021 and NEET 2021.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reduced the syllabus of Classes 9 to 12 for the academic year 2020-21 by 30%. The decision to scrap 30 % of the CBSE Syllabus from the upcoming year is taken because of the loss in classroom teaching due to the ongoing pandemic situation and lockdowns. The CBSE syllabus reduction affected all subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology which are important as well as critical for the students who want to appear for engineering and medical entrance exams next year i.e. JEE Main 2021 and NEET 2021. With CBSE syllabus reduction 2020-21, several topics from these subjects would not be taught in schools and, in one way or the other, impact aspirants of NEET and JEE Main 2021. While CBSE directed teachers to cover the reduced syllabus in order to make students connect these topics with the existing topics. But, it is obvious that the deleted syllabus would not be covered in schools with utmost importance.

The Board's declaration regarding the CBSE syllabus reduction immediately invited numerous questions on whether the National Testing Agency or NTA, too, will reduce the syllabus for NEET and JEE Main 2021. Despite the availability of coaching, classroom teaching does majorly help in JEE Main or NEET preparation. Classroom lectures and the textbooks of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) plays an important role for NEET and JEE aspirants.

CBSE Syllabus 2020-21: Which topics are reduced?

The MHRD and CBSE took the decision to reduce the CBSE syllabus by 30% in consultation with the course and curriculum committee. The Board decided to rationalise the syllabus to the extent of dropping about 30% of the content. While assurance is given by HRD minister Pokhriyal that “core concepts” will be retained, it still means students will see many topics reduced from their coursework. The complete details about the reduced syllabus and the topics that are deleted from Class 9 to 12 are mentioned on the official website of CBSE i.e. cbse.nic.in.

CBSE Syllabus Reduced by 30%: Possibilities of its impact on JEE and NEET 2021

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has not made any announcement regarding their plans for JEE Main and NEET 2021. However, as CBSE reduced syllabus by 30%, it is evident that these topics would not be taught in schools and students would now rely more on self-study or external coaching institutes for their JEE and NEET preparation. While the syllabus reduction is done to remove pressure and stress from students, the reduction might cause further confusion in a year for the students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams. The latest sessions of NEET and JEE Main 2021 is already postponed by more than five months. According to the announcement made by the HRD Minister, JEE Main 2020 will be conducted from September 1 to 6 and NEET 2020 will be conducted on September 13.

Meanwhile, CBSE is also prepping up to announce CBSE 10th Results 2020 and CBSE 12th Results 2020 by July 15. The Board cancelled pending exams for both the classes. However, CBSE 12th students will be given a chance to improve their scores by appearing in special exams. These exams will be conducted once normalcy is restored. CBSE Results 2020 will be released bases on internal assessments and students' performance in the exams that are already conducted.
